The Male’s Place is built on three foundational pillars: mentorship, agriculture, and social justice. Dedicated to expanding young minds, The Male’s Place continues to stand as one of Charlotte’s most impactful non-profit organizations.

Our mission extends beyond traditional mentorship, creating opportunities for African American boys aged 12-18 to grow, learn, and thrive. Through intentional programming, The Male’s Place equips young men with the tools necessary for personal and community transformation.

Life Skills Through Cultural Experiences

When not working in the garden, our youth participate in workshops, panel discussions, and cultural experiences designed to develop critical life skills. These activities emphasize personal growth, cultural awareness, and leadership, preparing them to navigate the complexities of adulthood with confidence and clarity. The youth participate in the program until graduation, meeting twice a week: Wednesdays for Manhood Training from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for gardening work during the gardening season, or 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for Manhood Training during the non-gardening season.

Community Gardening: Cultivating Growth and Giving Back

One of our core initiatives is the planning, planting, and maintenance of a community garden on Charlotte’s Westside. This hands-on experience teaches responsibility, teamwork, and sustainability. The boys are vital contributors, providing free, fresh vegetables to local neighborhoods that lack access to healthy produce. This initiative not only fosters a connection to the land but also instills a sense of purpose and pride as they address food insecurity within their own communities.

Holistic Development for Mind, Body, and Soul

At The Male’s Place, we advocate for a well-rounded approach to manhood development. Our programs include:

·        Behavioral Health Education: Prevention-based programs that address mental, emotional, and social well-being.

·        Mentorship and Life Skills Training: Guidance from experienced mentors to foster personal and professional growth.

·        Safe Community Environments: Creating spaces where young men can learn and grow both locally and internationally.

Our holistic curriculum incorporates educational, spiritual, agricultural, social, civic, artistic, recreational, and cultural enrichment. These elements work together to nurture the whole person, fostering a deep connection to community and a strong sense of brotherhood.

Special Events

The Annual Ceremonial Blessing of the Harvest

The Annual Ceremonial Blessing of the Harvest is a key tradition at The Males Place, reflecting its mission and values. This special event celebrates the sponsors, supporters, families, and guests whose contributions have been vital to the growth of both the garden and the organization. Highlights include a traditional African ceremony paying tribute to the ancestors and honoring community members who have played a significant role in advancing the organization’s mission. The Warriors (young men) of the program lead garden tours, distribute free produce to the community, sell various herbs and juices made from the garden’s produce, and are recognized for their dedication and hard work throughout the year.

MLK Parade Celebration

Each year, The Males Place (TMP) proudly participates in the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Parade. Joined by our Mshauris, Elders, and Warriors, we march together in unity and purpose, honoring Dr. King’s legacy while representing The Males Place with pride.

The Rite of Passage Ceremony

African rites of passage hold profound cultural, social, and psychological significance within our community. These traditions mark key life transitions, symbolizing the progression from one stage to another, and play a vital role in shaping individual identity while strengthening community cohesion.

At The Males Place (TMP), the Rites of Passage Ceremony is an integral part of the Manhood Training program. When our Warriors turn 18 and graduate high school, they are honored with a special ceremony to celebrate their transition into manhood.

National and International Travel

The Males Place (TMP) organizes annual trips that provide participants with opportunities to explore the world and immerse themselves in diverse cultures. These journeys have included destinations such as Belize South America, Charleston South Carolina, Cuba, Ghana West Africa; Montgomery Alabama, Selma Alabama, and Washington, D.C., offering our Warriors (young men) a deeper understanding of the Black experience across different parts of the world.

“It’s about exposing our young people beyond Charlotte, broadening their experiences, and encouraging them to see beyond Beatties Ford Road and Interstate 485—not only to make an impact in their homes and communities but to have a global impact,” says our Founder and Executive Director, Omachi Baba Reggie Singleton.

Annual Kwanzaa Ceremony

The Males Place proudly participates in a citywide Kwanzaa celebration each year. This event is designed for families who wish to learn about the origins, core principles, and seven symbols of this time-honored tradition celebrating family, community, and culture.

Our Mshauris and Elders educate the Warriors (young men) on the rich history and significance of Kwanzaa, ensuring they understand its importance. Warriors, community members, and their families are encouraged to take part in this powerful cultural ceremony, which honors the values and traditions that make Kwanzaa a meaningful celebration.

Annual Collard Greens Sale

The Males Place (TMP) proudly hosts an Annual Collard Greens Sale, featuring delicious, locally grown greens from a Black farmer. This initiative not only supports TMP’s mission but also provides valuable opportunities for our Warriors to develop entrepreneurial skills. They actively participate in the sales process, learning about marketing, customer service, and financial literacy.

In addition, the Warriors have the chance to grow their own collard greens in The Males Place garden, gaining hands-on experience in agriculture and sustainability. Proceeds from the sale fund a variety of activities and programs, including mentorship, life skills training, and cultural education, for African American boys ages 12–18. Together, we’re empowering the next generation, fostering community growth, and supporting local agriculture.

TMP Enrollment & Onboarding Process

• Parents/Guardians and prospective Warriors are encouraged to participate in Parent/Family Night, held on the last Wednesday of each month, as well as agricultural, fundraising, and cultural experiential activities.

• After the evaluation period, Warriors are expected to continue attending all Wednesday evening and Saturday morning sessions as part of their commitment to the program.

Application & Onboarding Requirements

To complete the onboarding process, families must:

• Submit a completed TMP application and health forms
