The Males Place Garden: Cultivating Skills and Community

Since 2009, The Males Place has nurtured a vibrant community garden at Fred Alexander Park. Agriculture is a cornerstone of our mission to guide young Black men on their journey to manhood. Led by our founder and Executive Director, Omachi Baba Reggie Singleton—a certified master gardener—the garden equips our warriors with essential life skills and a deep connection to the land and its traditions.

A Space for Growth and Learning

Fifty percent of the boys’ time with The Males Place is spent working in the garden, where they learn to grow organic produce and gain lifelong skills. “Those who know how to produce food may one day be the ones who thrive,” Singleton says. The garden feeds our warriors and their families, while also providing fresh produce to nearby seniors and low-income community members.

Through the garden, the young men gain entrepreneurial experience, selling produce at the Rosa Parks Farmers Market and the annual collard greens sale. They also learn sustainable agricultural practices from global experts, thanks to Singleton’s extensive studies and partnerships.

A Community Celebration: The Annual Blessing of the Harvest

Each fall, The Males Place hosts the Annual Ceremonial Blessing of the Harvest to celebrate the garden’s success. This event features traditional African drumming, dance, and a community gathering. The young men lead garden tours, share their experiences, and distribute free produce. The ceremony honors the efforts of our warriors, volunteers, sponsors, and donors, while giving thanks for the abundance of the harvest.
